Green Living – Recycling

I admit that I was so excited when Sandestin Resort started a curbside recycling program. They even supplied the green bin for you! Every Wednesday, I love driving through the resort seeing all the bins out by the curb for pick up. It’s great to know that people are finally getting into the recycling habit. While glass isn’t currently an option, I’m hoping that it will be soon.

For those that aren’t on the recycling wagon yet, here are some facts to consider:

§  A recycled aluminum can requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce a brand new can.

§  A ton (literally) of recycled paper means 60% less energy consumed, 17 trees saved, and 7,000 gallons of water conserved.

§  If everyone recycled the Sunday paper, it would save a million trees a week.

Once you get in the habit, it becomes second nature. Set up a system that makes it easy otherwise you aren’t as likely to continue the habit. Ask about the local guidelines for recycling. Some areas require the paper to be separated from everything else. Others (like Sandestin Resort) don’t accept certain items such as glass.

This is one of the easiest eco-habits to pick up that has such a huge impact. Your future generations will thank you!
